A PhD in renewable energy was elected president! Is Mexico's photovoltaic industry about to take off?

June 06, 2024

According to the Global Times, in the early morning of June 3rd local time, Claudia Sheinbaum, 61, announced in the capital of Mexico that she had won the presidential election and would become the first female president in Mexican history.

Mexico has unique natural conditions, but the development of the photovoltaic industry in Mexico is extremely slow. The election of Sheinbaum indicates that Mexico's renewable energy policy may usher in major changes.

Sheinbaum served as mayor of Mexico City from 2018 to 2023. During his tenure, he invested 400 million pesos to install a photovoltaic roof for a large fruit and vegetable market in Mexico City. The project has an installed capacity of 18MW and an annual power generation of 25GWh. It was officially put into operation in February this year.

Later, during the campaign, she proposed a plan to invest 13.57 billion US dollars in the next ten years to vigorously develop the photovoltaic and wind power industries and modernize 5 hydropower stations.

Reyes, head of LONGi Green Energy Mexico, Colombia and the Caribbean, also said that Mexico is a "sleeping giant" in the photovoltaic industry. Its huge energy demand and abundant light resources provide unique conditions for the development of photovoltaic projects.
